Welcome!

Thank you for sharing in the realization of this dream to provide services through my own private practice. Please allow me to share some information about myself to help guide your decision to work with me.  I am Certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.  This means that I have demonstrated knowledge, competency, and specialized skills in the treatment of psychiatric disorders.  Since I began practicing in 2007, I have encountered a wide range of patients, settings, and situations. These experiences, combined with motivation to help those who suffer, and excitement about new developments in the understanding of the human brain, have led to a very well rounded set of skills.  I have developed proficiency in a wide range of conditions, from conditions of childhood to all facets of the mind throughout life.  I find meaning in helping my patients find meaning in their own lives and life challenges.

I am licensed in Georgia. I was born in Decatur, Georgia, and I am a graduate of of Oglethorpe University in Atlanta. I obtained my MD  degree from the Medical College of Georgia and trained in Psychiatry at The University of Arizona. I completed a fellowship in Psychopharmacology Reserach and completed residency at The Medical College of Georgia.

I am experienced in outpatient, inpatient, public, private, child, adult, and psychiatry. Since I also work as an Investigator in clinical trials, I have a deeper understanding of how new medications are brought to market.  Making objective determinations in an empathic, holistic way is my modus operandi.  My technique has shown great success with even treatment resistant cases.  Holistic measures may include changing diet, avoiding certain environmental toxic exposures, and/or adding vitamins and supplements, while medications and therapy are also integral to my plan to lead patients to mental wellness.

I see patients between the ages of 5 and 65.

Hello! I'm
Maria E. Johnson M.D.

Dr. Johnson has special interest in Autism Spectrum Disorders and edited a book called Asperger’s Disorder published in 2008.

Her practice style tends to validate of the patient’s reports of their problems and then follows through to find some resolution, understanding, or meaning in that pain. She monitors for side effects from any medications prescribed and educates her clients about the risks of these drugs. By taking a thorough history that includes childhood experiences and life traumas and losses, Dr. Johnson helps find insight from the patient’s story. She reviews all biological, psychological and sociological aspects to relieve suffering. Because of her well-rounded experience of life as well as medicine, she has special ability to emphasize with those who have been through great pain.
